Zwaan Armchair

Zwaan Armchair

Description

Rietveld designed the Zwaan in 1958 for the World Expo in Brussels — then it moved to the UNESCO press room in Paris, where it held its own against an audience whose job was to pay attention. What makes its placement in that lineage remarkable is the departure it represents: Rietveld spent most of his career reducing furniture to structural logic — right angles, the geometry of the De Stijl movement made three-dimensional. The Zwaan breaks that pattern deliberately. Flowing lines replace the right angles; the silhouette reads as sculpture rather than diagram. Pastoe reissues it now in fabric or leather, on a wooden frame with steel springs — a softness that sits in the room like a counterpoint to the designer's own reputation.
